Indoor Lessons
Indoor swim lesson (currently at Hood College)
Swim lessons will be using the indoor pool at Hood College in Frederick. The pool is about 80 degrees which is not as warm as most July pools but should be fine for most children.
The quietest times will be midday during the week. The next quietest is Saturday and Sunday midday when there are no swim teams practicing. We have already included the pool fees in the lesson costs.
Lessons are held in about an 18 yard lane that has steps to enter into 3 feet of water; the deep end is just under 5 feet. This area might be shared with other swimmers and swim team might be practicing in the the lap lanes next to us.
For those ready for 25 yard lap lanes or kids expressing interest in joining swim teams for summer 2024, if lap lanes are available, we can begin utilize them helping to get them comfortable for swim team or just longer distances. These times are limited to Saturday and Sunday afternoon and midday weekdays.
The bathroom also has showers and a changing area. The bathroom is much warmer than the pool area so please use it to change your swimmer. We understand its an extra step to go there but its more comfortable for your child.
Parents can wait wherever you feel comfortable. Parent's with young swimmers should stay inside the building at a minimum (in the hallway is fine) in the case your swimmer needs to use the bathroom.
Being able to use Hood College's pool is a privilege - employees are working and students studying nearby. Please be courteous, respect and reasonable noise.
The pool does close for Hood College closings/ holidays and swim meets so if the pool is closed, your lesson will be canceled. We will do my best to give you as much notice as we get.
The Hood College pool closes for thunder until for 30 minutes after the last thunder.
If you have further questions, please reach out!
Suggested Parking area
Hood College Pool location: 561 Hodson Drive, Frederick, MD 21701
Parking on the street near Belmont Ave & Magnolia Ave, Frederick is the easiest.
It is encouraged to leave at least 5-10 minutes to park/ walk and settle into the pool. You know your family best- more if slow walkers, need to change, less if fast.
Once at the pool building (yellow star), walk in the door, and proceed straight through the next set of doors to the pool deck where I will meet you. Jenni has a pink basket and John has a black basket. The baskets typically hold toys/ kickboards. Changing rooms/ bathrooms are located in that hallway prior to the pool.
What to bring
The actual swim suit!
Towel
Goggles- if you have bring, if not, I have some. If you don't have them, you don't have to go rush and buy. Let's let them try some on and see what works- then you can get your own. There are many styles of goggle and not all will work for them.
Clothes/ underwear for after lessons*
Optional:
Sandals/ flip flops/ Shower shoes are generally nice to wear when walking to and from the bathroom
Beanie cap/ hat, for wet hair (winter)
There are showers in the changing rooms so bring shampoo/ soap/ etc
Bag for the wet swimsuit
Snack for after (please put trash in the trashcan)
Entertainment/ homework for siblings
Book/ entertainment for you. You get 30 minutes of you time!
*Underwear is the most forgotten item historically given many kids come with their swimsuits under their clothes but would like to change out of the wet swimsuit, only to discover none were packed*
